Dishwashers are fantastic appliances that save us time and effort. However, they need regular cleaning to maintain their efficiency and ensure that your dishes come out sparkling clean every time. Here’s a comprehensive guide on how to clean your dishwasher, ensuring it runs smoothly and smells fresh.
Before diving into the cleaning process, it’s essential to understand why cleaning your dishwasher is crucial:
Start by removing all dishes, utensils, and racks from the dishwasher. This will give you full access to all areas that need cleaning.
Locate the filter at the bottom of the dishwasher. Depending on your model, it may be a cylindrical piece that twists off or a flat screen that lifts out. Remove the filter and rinse it under hot, soapy water. Use a brush to scrub away any stubborn food particles.
The spray arms are responsible for distributing water throughout the dishwasher. Over time, they can get clogged with debris. Remove the spray arms and rinse them under water. Use a toothpick or a pin to clear any blocked holes.
Using a microfiber cloth and some warm, soapy water, wipe down the interior walls, door, and rubber gasket around the door. Pay special attention to corners and crevices where grime can accumulate.
Place a cup of white vinegar in a dishwasher-safe bowl or cup on the top rack of the dishwasher. Run a hot water cycle. The vinegar will help break down any remaining food particles, grease, soap scum, and residue inside the dishwasher, leaving it smelling fresh and clean.
After the vinegar cycle is complete, sprinkle a cup of baking soda across the bottom of the dishwasher. Run a short hot water cycle. Baking soda will help deodorize and further clean your dishwasher, removing any lingering odors.
Don’t forget the exterior of your dishwasher. Use a damp cloth and mild dish soap to wipe down the front of the dishwasher. For stainless steel models, you can use a stainless steel cleaner to remove smudges and fingerprints.
